To the botanist the phloxes of Texas are bewildering in their variation and diversity, but to the wildflower lover they are simply a joy of spring. Several of the annual species, such as this one, can occur in large brightly colored patches along highways. This red-flowered variety occurs in the region between Houston and Austin. It is one of many varieties of Drummond's phlox, almost all of which prefer sandy soils and are very showy in various colors.
