The flowering dogwood is a common small tree, both wild and cultivated, in East Texas. Its spring bloom will bring Texans out into the forest, to drive or walk routes that best show off the display. This is the "complete deal"--a small tree with beautiful layered form and interesting bark, showy "flowers" (actually, groups of minute flowers surrounded by four showy white bracts), pretty red fruits, and attractive reddish fall foliage.
