Lovers of the Big Bend country know the strawberry cactus. The "mound" can be composed of 100 or more cylindrical stems and is an impressive display in self-defense. The showy flowers transform it into a dazzling floral display, usually in April. These then give rise to fruits that are the desert epicure's quest and delight.
