No matter how many times one sees the columbine in bloom, it never ceases to be a thrill. Although this is the common columbine of much of the eastern United States, in Texas it occurs only in deciduous forests of canyon bottoms in central Texas, where it grows on honeycombed limestone rock and blooms in the spring. It "jumps" from the nearest localities, in southeastern Oklahoma, to the Hill Country, and is thus said to have a "disjunct" distribution pattern.
