PCL dedication ceremony, August 29, 1977

The Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL) was dedicated on August 29, 1977. At that ceremony, Harold W. Billings, director of General Libraries at the University of Texas at Austin, stated,

"PCL represents not only the tradition of library magnificence on campus, not only a continuation of service in the preservation of knowledge and delivery of information--it represents a new dedication to openness and availability of library materials for all users." [more]

He anticipated a revolution of accessibility that continues to evolve today. Books are now available in electronic format, databases are more comprehensive, easier to use, and include full-text, and all of these resources are available 24/7 via the UT Library Online (UTLOL).

The essential link connecting resources with the people who need them are the librarians who build and maintain UT Austin's collection of over 8 million volumes, 2.5 million of which are house in PCL. Whether you visit the library in person (the "brick") or visit the collection electronically (the "click"), you'll have access to service-oriented staff and a wealth of information. Please join us in celebrating "PCL @ 25" and take a look at how we've changed!
