Digital Assets Discussion Group: Learning About Digital Assets - Management - Access

Access for scholarly work in the public domain is of little consequence, but for that intellectual property which is copyrighted it is of the utmost importance. Access, however, does not simply hinge upon copyright. Access through the process of search and discovery is vital for information’s effective use.

Currently, DAMS determines two levels of access privileges: access to digital assets contained within DAMS’ repository and digital archive for management purposes by the depositing organization and access based upon user groups or audiences, be they faculty, students, or the public. The first level of access can be achieved through permissions and authorizations specified in the DAMS IT system architecture. The second level of access can be achieved in slightly different ways depending on the user group. Metadata tags can immediately designate general levels of access such as public domain or a specific user group. Within user groups further access limitation can be achieved by through the University’s UTEID.
