Digital Assets Discussion Group: Learning About Digital Assets - Creation

Whether you are converting to digital or producing original material, you will want to consider issues that impact later ability to preserve and archive your digital objects. The Digital Assets Discussion Group is working to develop digitization standards and material production guidelines that can be consulted by collection developers to aid in the creation of their digital materials.

Initial resources that may be helpful include the books Digital Imaging: a Practical Handbook by Stuart D. Lee and Moving Theory Into Practice by Anne R. Kenney and Oya Y. Rieger. Both books are available through the General Libraries. Additionally, an online tutorial (http://www.library.cornell.edu/preservation/tutorial/) based upon Moving Theory Into Practice is also available.

Digital reformatting spans media other than text and images. Projects for the digitization of analog audio recordings are increasingly receiving funding from granting agencies. Three-dimensional objects, whether artistic or anthropological or geological can be digitally reformatted. More guidance on digital reformatting can be found through the Digital Collections Services staff.
