University of Texas Libraries
Celebrating the Life

We invite you to help us build the University of Texas Library collection!

In the next year, the University of Texas Libraries will add more than 100,000 volumes to its collection, which will support the learning, research and knowledge of our 50,000 students and more than 3,000 faculty and researchers.

Your involvement will help improve the UT experience for our students; provide needed resources for our faculty; and impact research that will change the world.

It’s easy…by selecting one or more items from the list below and making a contribution that will purchase the item(s) of your choice. In recognition of your passion for providing resources for our students and faculty, we will list your name or name you designate (for honorees or memorials) in the online catalogue record for the item you purchased.

The wish list below includes items that have been identified by our librarians and faculty as important resources needed for instruction and research. This list is by no means everything that faculty have requested.

We hope that you take a few moments to review the list and find an item that excites you or one that you feel UT should have. The list can be sorted so that you can find something of interest conveniently.

Thank you for contributing to the future of our University!

If you have questions about a specific item or subject area, please call Gregory Perrin, assistant director for development at 512-495-4349 or email at perring@austin.utexas.edu.

  • Exhibition enhancement through flat files:

The Alexander Architectural Archive participates in many open houses throughout the year to promote collections, welcome new and prospective students, and for campus-wide events such as Explore UT. It also provides custom exhibits prepared for classes where collections are used in teaching and learning, in recruitment of faculty, for events accompanying lectures and development efforts. Using "canned" exhibits in flat file drawers has enabled opportunities for quick display for serendipitous visits of the Dean or Development staff and their VIP guests.

Currently, flat files serve as impromptu exhibit decks. Mylar sheets cover the works as a protective measure but create a distracting glare. The decking consists of materials in folders stored in the drawer and is therefore uneven and limited in size. Due to lack of proper storage options, oversized collection material is located on top of the flat files in an unsightly manner while taking up valuable exhibition space. Access is difficult.

  • Eye on Dance & The Arts Video:

Hailed as "one of the liveliest and most intelligent programs on the arts" by the New York Times, EYE ON DANCE & THE ARTS is the only series of its kind. Launched in 1981, this issue-driven series chronicles over a decade of dance and arts figures. Propelled by lively discussions, each program documents cutting-edge, established, and historical voices. Photographs, videotape excerpts of performances, and demonstrations enhance each segment's visual content.

This series is on DVD now and Fine Arts Library owns only 6 of the 326 half-hour programs. Having the whole series would be ideal. Each half-hour program costs $175.

  • George F. and Geraldine D. Andrews archival processing:

Beginning in the late 1950s, architect George F. Andrews and his wife Geraldine spent over forty years visiting and studying the Yucatán and its Mayan culture and architecture. This collection includes many pages of descriptive data, architectural drawings, and photographs documenting the region (36 linear feet manuscript materials, 1,530 professional view camera images, nearly 6,000 35mm images, over 8,000 color transparencies, approximately 2,300 architectural drawings).

In its current unprocessed state, records remain inaccessible and unprotected from further physical degradation. Archival processing will ensure preservation-sound storage, organization and cataloging. This unprocessed collection has already influenced the discovery of a royal Maya tomb (one of the most significant archeological discoveries in the last decade), and a Fulbright Scholarship based upon research using this collection. Imagine the treasures that await scholars if we were able to fund an effort to fully organize this collection - researchers everywhere would easily know what is in each box filled with valuable manuscripts, photographs and artifacts. Once the collection is processed it can be considered for digitization.

  • Medieval Travel Writing:

This project provides direct access to a widely scattered collection of original medieval manuscripts that describe travel - real and imaginary - in the Middle Ages. The project combines: multiple manuscript sources detailing the journeys of famous travelers from Prester John and Marco Polo to Sir John Mandeville and John Capgrave; translations and supporting materials (all of which are fully searchable); maps showing the routes of the travelers; and Introductory essays by leading scholars.

These sources tell us much about the attitudes and preconceptions of people across Europe in the medieval period, shedding light on issues of race, economics, trade, militarism, politics, literature and science. They will be welcomed by scholars in both literature and history as well as by French and German studies departments.

  • Southern Architect and Building News scanning project:

Southern Architect and Building News is one of the oldest regional architectural journals in the country. The Architecture & Planning Library has the most complete run including many unique issues, not available at any other library. Students and scholars beyond architecture are interested in this valuable resource including those in American Studies, Southern history, advertising and technology.

Because of its rarity, the journal has yet to be indexed, making it inaccessible short of browsing page by page. Although our holdings are remarkable, we do not have a full run of publication. Scanning our holdings and making them available is the first step in providing world-wide access for scholarship. It also provides opportunity for indexing by the Avery Index and for further collaboration with other libraries to fill in our gaps in the journal's publishing run.

  • Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception:

30 volumes (online perpetual access) when complete. From publishers web page: "(EBR) pursues a twofold task. Firstly, it comprehensively renders the current state of knowledge on the origins and development of the Bible according to its different canonic forms in Judaism and Christianity. Secondly, it documents the history of the Bible’s reception, not only in the Christian churches and the Jewish Diaspora, but also in literature, art, music, and film, as well as Islam and other religious traditions and current religious movements. With the help of a comprehensive search engine the online edition of the EBR makes the articles fully searchable."

Supports Religious Studies and other coursework across campus: Fine Arts, Classics, Anthropology, Women's Studies, Latin American Studies. Anticipate UT Contributors.

This is a yearly subscription to online database of scholarly articles and primary source material related to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies.

While we have resources that cover gender studies more broadly, this is the primary one for LGBT Studies specifically and includes frontline content from regional LGBT publications. This material supports the growing number of LGBT- focused classes offered at UT as well as the LGBT Research Cluster, one of several official research groups spearheaded by the Center for Women's and Gender Studies. The Cluster is working on developing an LGBT Studies degree program, which this material also directly supports.
