Through the generosity of Dr. Nettie Lee Benson, long-time Director of the Latin American Collection (now the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection) and Professor of History, the University of Texas Libraries was able to establish the Benson Fund to support the purchase of rare and scarce materials relating to Latin America. Since its creation in 1975, the endowment was substantially increased with additional donations by Dr. Benson, many of her former students, and through a bequest of $100,000 in the spring of 1994 from the Hilda Barnard Estate.
