What: Fourth Annual LLILAS Benson Student Photography Exhibition. This event and exhibition are free and open to the public.
When: 5-7 p.m., Monday, September 30.
Background: The annual LLILAS Benson Student Photography Exhibition kicks off its fourth year with an opening reception in Sid Richardson Hall on September 30.
This annual exhibition — sponsored by the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection and the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies — features photographs taken by University of Texas at Austin graduate and undergraduate students during study abroad in Latin America and continental Latino communities. The rich diversity of images in the exhibition highlights the expansive research, fieldwork and volunteer activities in which students of Latin American and Latina studies across the campus have engaged during the previous year.
This year exhibition organizers have introduced two awards to the event — one for best documentary photograph and one for best art photograph — with the winning submissions selected by a panel of LLILAS Benson faculty and staff. Award winners will be announced at the exhibition opening reception on September 30.
“This exhibit, now a well-established LLILAS Benson tradition, highlights the striking talent of our students and exemplifies one of the important elements of our mission — to learn about Latin America through being there, up-close and deeply engaged with the subjects of research,” says LLILAS Benson Director Charles Hale.
The exhibition will be on view at the Benson Latin American Collection in Sid Richardson Hall Unit 1 throughout the fall semester.
Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
