AUSTIN, Texas (May 14, 2010) — The University of Texas Libraries have announced the winner of the 2010 Signature Course Information Literacy Award.

Rebecca Wortmann won the award for her paper "Romani Political Struggles in the European Union," which was nominated by Dr. Ian Hancock for work in his Signature Course The Price of Identity: Romani Reality and Gypsy Myth.Photo of Rebecca Wortmann by Cynthia Fisher

The Signature Course Information Literacy Award recognizes exemplary student work that achieves the learning outcomes of the Signature Course information literacy requirement, which are that students will be able to create and execute a research strategy, critically evaluate information, and use citations.

Wortmann's paper was chosen for its incorporation of a variety of sources into a sophisticated and well-documented analysis of a very complex topic.

The $500 award is given annually to a faculty-nominated project submitted in a Signature Course and is judged by a panel consisting of librarians, faculty and members of the Undergraduate Studies staff.
