Finding Data 101
Finding reliable scientific data is not always easy. Sometimes it can be very confusing and time consuming. Sometimes you won't find anything. This tutorial is intended to give you a quick demonstration of looking up common physical and thermodynamic data for small organic molecules using reliable, authoritative sources.
The "Top 3" starting points for any chemical data search are all listed on the Chemistry Library's home page:
- CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics
(CRC ChemnetBase and print)
- NIST Chemistry WebBook
- DIPPR
There are others too, but this tutorial will focus on these three core resources. The CRC Handbook and DIPPR are licensed and restricted to UT-Austin students and faculty/staff. The NIST WebBook is open to all.
To get the most from this tutorial open a separate browser window and connect to the tool in question so you can try it out for yourself as you go.
