Chemistry Library News
Spring 2007
UT System Libraries have licensed Thieme's Science of Synthesis online database. This powerful resource contains the full text of all published volumes of the new 5th edition of this well known series, plus the entire full text of the completed 4th edition of Houben-Weyl Methoden der Organischen Chemie (1909-2003). You can browse the 5th edition by detailed table of contents or do sub/structure and keyword searches, and view the full text on your desktop. Science of Synthesis is a major source of highly authoritative reviews and information on synthetic methodologies and molecular transformations. For more information go to
We have started a subscription to the new web-based version of the proceedings preprints of the ACS Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering (PMSE). This site provides access to preprints previously available only on CD-ROM. The ACS preprint server will eventually expand to include other divisional proceedings.
Electrochemical Society publications now online-only
The long-running book series Proceedings (Electrochemical Society) is now an online database back to 2005. The flagship Journal of the Electrochemical Society is now online back to 1955.
Mallet Library Renovations
The Chemistry Library was recarpeted during the holiday break. The circulation desk received a fine new granite counter top as well, and a project to refurbish some of our study carrels and furniture is nearing completion. New electrical outlets were installed along the south wall study carrels to make plugging in laptops more convenient. These long-awaited improvements were funded by the University Libraries.
By the Numbers
UT-Austin researchers and students logged over 196,000 searches in SciFinder Scholar during 2006. This was a 13 percent increase over 2005. Over 161,000 articles were downloaded from American Chemical Society journals in 2006. These figures put the University in the top echelon of information consumers worldwide.
