1882

Prof. John W. Mallet arrives in Austin to found the Chemistry Dept; he is appointed first Chairman of the Faculty.

1883

Chemistry Library founded in Chemistry Dept.
Classes begin at UT in September.

1884

Edgar Everhart becomes Chemistry Professor

1892

Chemistry Dept. moves to new Chemical Laboratory building. Library contains approximately 500 volumes; allocation for books is $407.43

1894

Henry Harper becomes Chairman

1899

Liebigs Annalen backfile (v.1-291) purchased from German lab for $700

1901

Library, now around 3,000 volumes, receives first permanent quarters in Chemistry Laboratory, Room 12 on 2nd floor.

1924

Prof. Harry Lochte submits first Annual Report on library operations to University Librarian

1926

Library moved to ground floor.
October 16: Chemical Laboratory building destroyed by fire.
Library moved to temporary quarters in Biology Building

1931

New Chemistry Building opens; Library moves into 4th floor facility
Pharmacy Library housed in same facility, but separately shelved.

1934

Library officially named for John W. Mallet

1940

Chemical Engineering splits from Chemistry to become separate department

1947

Martha Thurlow returns to become first professional librarian in charge;
position becomes full time.

1949

Ivan Trombley becomes second Mallet librarian

1951

Aubrey Skinner becomes third Mallet librarian

1952

Pharmacy Library moves out

1963

First photocopy machine installed in Library: a Xerox 914.

1964

Library is air-conditioned.

1965

Collection exceeds 25,000 volumes

1968

First 2,000 volumes sent to new Collections Deposit Library (CDL) storage facility

1970

UT Library adopts Library of Congress classification system for new books

1973

Home economics collection added to Chemistry Library

ca.1975

First online literature searches performed

1978

Library moves to current space under courtyard

1983

Automated circulation system launched; security system installed.

1985

Aubrey Skinner dies
Skinner Endowment established

1986

Christine Johnston becomes fourth Mallet Librarian
First major serials cut

1987

Collection exceeds 50,000 volumes

1988

UTCAT online catalog launched; card catalog closed
First PC installed - an IBM XT

1990

Second major serials cut; Beilstein Handbook and Landolt-Börnstein cancelled

1992

David Flaxbart becomes fifth Mallet Librarian
CD-ROM network launched
Third major serials cut; Gmelin Handbook cancelled

1993

New Library Storage Facility opens on Balcones (now Pickle) Research Campus

1994

First Mallet Library web page goes online
Remaining on-site Dewey Decimal books converted to Library of Congress system

1995

Card catalog discarded

1997

Beilstein Crossfire database licensed
Collection exceeds 75,000 volumes

1998

James E. and Ruth Ann Boggs Endowment established

1999

ACS Web Journals licensed
Welch Foundation provides grant for acquisition of chemical information

2000

SciFinder Scholar licensed
First wave of print-journal cancellations in favor of electronic versions

2001

Last year to receive printed Chemical Abstracts and its Collective Index

2004

Collection exceeds 90,000 volumes

2006

Nutrition collection moves to Life Science Library
