  1. Ferrone died in 1961 after a short illness, at the age of 40.
  2. After Gomberg completed his PhD under the toxicologist A. B. Prescott, he traveled to Heidelberg to study organic chemistry with Baeyer and Viktor Meyer, who is listed here as his primary influence. (cf. Mainz)
