LETTER OF TRANSMITTAL.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, INSURANCE, STATISTICS, AND HISTORY.,
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF TEXAS,
AUSTIN, TEXAS, May 31, 1893.

Hon. Jno. E. Hollingsworth, Commissioner of Agriculture, Insurance, Statistics, and History, Austin, Texas:

DEAR SIR—I have the honor to transmit herewith the Fourth Annual Report of the Geological and Mineralogical Survey of Texas.

This report comprises, in addition to the papers devoted to general and economic geology, others on paleontology, which are in themselves of a purely scientific nature, but are most intimately associated with our work, and absolutely essential to its correct prosecution. A paper on Natural History is also included, as the law instituting the Survey makes that subject a portion of our work.

The Printing Board having decided that only 1100 copies of the reports of each department could be printed, and that none of them could be bound, I asked permission to have this report issued in parts, each to contain one or more papers. This was granted, and the report, which was originally intended to be a single volume, has been issued in eleven parts, as follows:

  • Part 1. Report of State Geologist, pages i to xxxviii.

    GENERAL AND ECONOMIC GEOLOGY.

  • Part 2. Report on Grimes, Brazos, and Robertson Counties. By W. Kennedy. Pages 1-84, with maps and sections.
  • Part 3. Preliminary Report on the Artesian Wells of the Gulf Coastal Slope. By J. A. Singley. Pages 85-114. Preliminary Report on the Organic Remains obtained from the Deep Well at Galveston, together with conclusions respecting the Age of the Various Formations Penetrated. By Gilbert D. Harris. Pages 115-120, and table.
  • Part 4. Report on the Rocks of Trans-Pecos Texas. By A. Osann. Pages 121-138. Trans-Pecos Texas. By W. H. Streeruwitz. Pages 139-176.
  • Part 5. Notes on the Geology of Northwest Texas. By W. F. Cummins. Pages 177-238.
