AnswerToAPleaForGeologyFORGEOLOGY

LastyearwefaceduptothefactthattheGeologyDepartmentoftheUniversityofTexashasbeendoingmoreteachingwithlessmoneyperstudentthananyothermajorgeologydepartment.WeissuedapleaforhelpintheNewsletterandinaDecemberlettertoouralumni.Herearesomeoftheresults:

First,theUniversityadministrativeofficersandtheBoardofRegentsgranteda30%increaseinthedepartmentalbudgetbeginningSeptember1955.Thismadepossibletwoadditionalteachersandsubstantialraisesthroughoutthegeologyfaculty.Italsopermittedthepurchaseofnewequipmentandmuchneededtechnicalhelpforthedepartment.WenowestimatethatthecostperstudentcredithourinGeologyatTexashasbeenincreasedfrom$8.30toapproximately$11.00.ThismeansthatwearenowclosetoaverageamongthelargeGeologyDepartmentsintheamountofmoneyspentperstudent.Wehopewecanbebetterthanaverageinthefuture.

Second,theUniversityadministrativeofficersandtheBoardofRegentshavegranteda19%increaseinthedepartmentalbudgetbeginningSeptember1956.Thiswillmakepossibleadditionalteachersandadditionalequipment.Supplementalmoneywillalsomakepossibledistinguishedvisitingteachersduringthe1956-57schoolyear.Theexpectedincreaseinenrollmentmayoffsetthesegainsinbudget,sowearenowpredictingthatcostswillremainabout$11.00perstudentcredithourduring1956-57.ThesesubstantialincreasesindepartmentalbudgetduringtwoyearsmakeusfeelthattheadministrativeofficersandtheBoardofRegentshavefaithinusandourscience.Similarincreaseshavenotbeenpossibleforallsciencedepartmentsonthemaincampus.

Third,andmostsignificantly,theGeologyAlumnioftheUniversityofTexasandmanyotherinterestedpersonshaverespondedtremendouslythroughourGeologyFoundation.SinceourDecemberlettertotheAlumni,115GeologyAlumnihavecontributedatotalofalmost$2,500(asofMay15th).Non-alumnicontributorshavegivenanother$2,500.TheSimonds-CuylerMemorialScholarshipfundsintheGeologyFoundationhavegrowntoabout$1,500.Onedistinguishedalmumnus,Mr.WayneF.BowmanofHoustonhaspledgedacontributionof$100permonthforfiveyearsbeginningFebruary1956plus$25.00permonthfor10monthsfortheSimonds-CuylerMemorialScholarshipfunds.Anotherdistinguishedalumnus,MoseKnebel,andhiswifehavecontributed15sharesofstockinCreolePetroleumCorporation.Thusatotalofmorethan$7,500hasbeencontributedduringthefirstsixmonthsofthisyear.
