WeasteachersofGeologyatTheUniversityofTexasneedthehelpofeveryalumnusandeverypersonwhoisinterestedintheimportanceofgeologicaleducationinTexas.Weneedit-aowandwe,needitbadly.

Herearesomefactsthatyoushouldknow:1.Morethan3,500(30%)ofthemembershipoftheAmericanAssociationofPetroleumGeologistsliveandworkinTexas.2.TheeconomicincomefrompetroleumintheStateofTexasissurpassedbynootherindustryandthisindustryisdependentupongeologistsforfindingitsrawmaterial.3.TheprosperityoftheStateTreasuryofTexasistiedcloselytotheprosperityofthepetroleumindustry.Anylaginsupplyofyounggeologistswilldefinitelymeanalagofrawmaterialsuppliestothepetroleumindustry.4.1Geologyisamongthetopfiveprofessions(theothers\beingBusiness,Engineering,Law,andMedicine)\chosenbyTreshmenboysatTexasasbeingthelineofIworktheydesiretopursueinlife.5.TheUniversityofTexashasgrantedSj^ofthebachelor~cle^r£esinGeologyintheUnitedStatesduringthepast15years.ThismeansthatoneoutoftwelvegeologistsintheUnitedStatesisfromTheUniversityofTexas.6.TheUniversityofTexashasmorestudentsenrolledinGeologythananyotheruniversityintheworld.OurconclusionisclearlythatGEOLOGYISIMPORTANTTOTHESTATEOFTEXAS.Asfarasnumberofgeologistsandtheamountofgeologicalactivityisconcerned,Texasisthegeologicalcenteroftheworld.Ontheotherhandherearesomemorefactstoconsider:7.Only14regularteachers.26teachingassistants(graduatestudents)and21studentassistantsareemployedtohandleapproximately2,600Geologystudentseachsemester.8.TheUniversityofTexasnowranksthirdfrombottominalistoi"B7majoruniversitiesintheamountofmoneyitspendsperstudentcredithourinGeology.(AdetailedcompilationofarecentsurveymaybehadfreefromtheDepartmentofGeology.)Thesurveyshowsthattheaverage_cogts_m_Geologyare_fromSl6_to_$17perstudentcredithourinthese57schools.9.SchoolslikeTexasA.&M.,OklahomaUniversity,Iowa_University,andUniversityofMichiganspendtwoto

threetimesasmuchmoneyperstudentcredithourinGeologyasdoesTexas.10.Geologycostsarethelowestamongsciences(Physics,Chemistry,andBiology)atTheUniversityofTexas.ItevencostslesstogiveacredithourinGeologythanitdoestogiveacredithourinspeech.(DetailsofthisanalysisareavailablefromtheDepartmentofGeology,andbasicfiguresarepublishedinregularUniversityofTexasbulletins.)11.Returnsfrom24ofthe57majoruniversitiessurveyedrecentlyoncostsofeducationshowthatGeologyranksalongwithothersciencesatanaveragecostofabout$16to$17perstudentcredithour.Nofavoritismisshowntoanyparticularscienceintheseotherschools.12.GeologyteachingcostshavedeclinedatTheUniversityofTexasfrom$9.91perstudentcredithourin1951—52toanestimated$8.13perstudentcredithourin1954-55.Thisisduetotherapidincreaseinenrollmentwithnomajorincreaseinexpendituresandnomajorincreaseinnumberoffaculty(seeaccompanyingchart).

WHATISBEINGDONEABOUTGEOLOGYATTHEUNIVERSITYofTEXAS?YourfacultyhasaskedforaSH%increaseJinbudgettohiremoreteachers,payhighersalariesandtobuymoreequipjnent.Your_facultyhasaskedformorelaboratoryandclassroojxLaj^ace.Wehaveaskedforawingtothe_GeologyBuildmg.Nomorespaceisavailableandwearetoldnoneisexpectedtobeavailable.Basedonthisyourfacultyhasaskedthatfreshman,sophomore,andjuniorrequiredcoursesingeologybelimitedtotheamountofspaceinthelaboratoriesandclassroomsandthatonlystudentswith"C"gradesorbetterinallprerequisitesbepermittedtoenroll.ThiswilldefinitelylimitthenumberofsophomoreandjuniorGeologymiajorseachyeartothenumbernowpresentonthecampus.Noexpansionwillbepossiblewithoutmorespace.Allavailableofficespaceforfaculty,graduatestudents,andteachingassistantsisnowfullandtheadditionofnewteacherswouldmeandoublinguponofficespace.The14activeteachersinGeologyatTheUniversityofTexasarehandlingontheaverage180studentspersemesterThechanceforpersonalcontactislowascomparedwithotherUniversities.EachteacherinGeologyatTheUniversityofTexascarriesafullloadof9to12semesterhoursofcoursework(bylegislativelaw)andtheycarrythesis,dissertation,andresearchworkoverandabovetheirfullload.OtherUniversitiesrequireamaximumteachingloadof6semesterhourspersemester.Againthechanceforpersonalcontact
