Dear Users of the Benson Collection,

During the summer 2007, the University of Texas Libraries and Google Books began a multi-year program to digitize books from the Benson Latin American Collection and other campus libraries. In time, the program will facilitate finding information and full-text sources through electronic means in addition to the University Libraries online catalog and other electronic services. Works about Latin America and in the public domain (most works published before 1923) will be made widely accessible through this ambitious project. Through Google, researchers will also have other avenues to locate works published after 1923.

The staff of the Benson Collection wants to alert you that sections of the library will be unavailable for periods projected at up to five weeks. Individual items out for digitization will be designated in the library catalog as "Staff Use ." If you are scheduling a research trip to the Benson Collection please contact us in advance to inquire about the availability of materials you may wish to consult (phone: 512-495-4520).

In the event that you are unable to locate a specific work due to this project, we encourage you to seek alternatives:

     • Holds may be requested through Benson circulation staff; you will be notified when a book has been returned.
• Use Google Book Search ( http://books.google.com/ ) to see if an electronic version of a title is already available.
• Interlibrary Loan: an ILL request form is linked from the Libraries homepage.
• Electronic versions of recently published books from netLibrary as noted in the University Libraries catalog.
• Journal articles and other full-text databases available online.

Students, faculty, and visitors are encouraged to consult our staff for specific needs. We are here to help.

Best wishes for a successful academic year,

Margo Gutiérrez
Interim Head Librarian
