Exhibition: Raíces y Sabores – Foodways of Nicaragua
A collection of foodways images by celebrated Nicaraguan photographer Celeste González will be on view in the first-floor corridor of the Benson Latin American Collection through July 15, 2016.
Celeste González was born in 1954 in León, Nicaragua, to a family active in photography since the early twentieth century. She began her photographic career with Semanario El Tayacán (1983), producing popular photo essays and publishing artistic photographs in Barricada’s Semanario Ventana (1984–1987). She worked as a photojournalist at Pensamiento Propio magazine (1989–1991) and as the culture and gender editor at Enlace (1991–1998). She is the author and illustrator of the book Rivas de la Cuaresma (2012), as well as co-author and illustrator of various children’s stories and educational materials. González has published numerous artistic photographs in Artefacto, and her work has been featured in over forty exhibitions. Her most recent show, Arcanos Mayores, took place in 2014 at the Palacio de la Cultura de Managua. González has also organized conferences and workshops on photography at universities throughout Nicaragua. In 2008, she was honored with the Rubén Darío Order of Cultural Independence by the government of Nicaragua.
