Three Ways to Search Grove Art Online:

  1. Article Search: the Search box at the top right of every page searches for your topic word(s) in the main article headings only. If you would like to narrow your search, browse the Table of Contents of the article you have just retrieved. (Example: article heading is "Rome, ancient", but you can link to the subject "Rome, ancient ---Architecture---Types of building---Religious" from the Table of Contents.)
  2. Full Text Search: will search the entire text of Grove Art Online (excluding captions) for every mention of the word you enter. Choose one of the three Search Modes offered:
    1. CONCEPT: this mode will locate any words that are synonymous or related in meaning or form ("mouse" and "mice")
    2. PATTERN: looks for words similar in spelling to your search term. This is useful when you are unsure of a spelling or when a word has an alternate spelling ("color" and "colour")
    3. BOOLEAN: will only search for exact matches of words or phrases. Use it to combine multiple words or phrases in a search. Combine your words or phrases with one of the following: and/or/not.
  3. BROWSING: the Browse option allows you to browse the list of article titles, contributors, appendices and the index. You can type a word in the Go To box to skip through the listing or click on the alphabet listing.
Further search options:
You may also search art image collections or image links, biographies, bibliographies, contributors and captions in the printed dictionary. An Explore option is also available. For more information on these and other search strategies in Grove Art, click on the Help link.
