Benjamin Marshall, AIA (1874-1944); Charles Fox, AIA (1870-1926)
In the early decades of the 20th century, the Chicago firm Marshall & Fox (later known as Walton and Walton) excelled in the design of luxury hotel and apartment buildings, including the Blackstone Hotel (1908) and the Edgewater Beach Apartments (1927). Acting as both developer and architect, this firm attracted wealthy tenants to high-rise buildings by adopting the characteristics of the elegant French “flat.” Many of their buildings still line Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive today. More than 9,000 drawings are supplemented by photographs and contract ledgers.
