Robert H. H. Hugman, FAIA (1902-1980)
The Hugman collection is comprised of the working drawings for the San Antonio Riverwalk. Hugman began work on the design of the project in 1929 in an effort to save the river from being paved over as a flood prevention plan. Funding, however, was not available until 1938 when Congressman Maury Maverick secured WPA funds. Completed in 1941, the project spanned 21 blocks of downtown San Antonio and serves as a model of success in urban planning. As project architect, Hugman created a vital urban space within a natural environment, allowing San Antonio to retain its native beauty.
