Biographical Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Biographical dictionaries and encyclopedias provide biographical data (such as birth and death dates and lists of works), bibliographies and essays that are authored by experts in the field.

1. MacMillan Encyclopedia of Architects: NA 200 S74 1979 Architecture Lib. Reference

Biographies of architects, engineers, landscape architects, and planners from all geographic regions, born before December 31, 1930. Articles feature bibliographies and lists of built works. Includes a glossary, a chronological list of architects, and a buildings index.

2. Contemporary Architects: NA 40 C6 1994B Architecture Lib. Reference (also refer to 1980 and 1987 editions)

Covers international architects and firms working over the past fifty years. Includes bibliographies and lists of built works. Some articles feature statements written by the architect.

3. Dictionary of Art: N 31 D5 1996 V. 1-34 Architecture Lib. Reference Also available online as Grove Art Online through Databases & Indexes to Articles on the University of Texas Libraries web site.

An exhaustive encyclopedia of art and architecture from around the world, with coverage from prehistory to the present. A good source for lists of recommended readings.

4. International Dictionary of Architects and Architecture: NA 40 I48 1993 Architecture Lib. Reference

Volume 1 of this set covers architects and firms from around the world.

5. Encyclopedia of Architecture: NA 31 E59 1988 V.1-5 Architecture Lib. Reference

Published by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), includes biographical information on major 20th century architects.

6. Who's Who in Architecture: From 1400 to the Present : NA 40 W48 Architecture Lib. Ref. and Stacks

An extensive listing of biographical information on architects from the 15th century to contemporary times.

7. Icons of Architecture: the 20th Century : NA 680 I26 1998 Architecture Lib. Reference

Includes brief biographical sketches of architects along with historical background/description and color photographs of an exemplary building by the architect.

8. IAWA Biographical Database: http://lumiere.lib.vt.edu/iawa_db/

Compiled by the International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA) this database's focus is on historical rather than current women architects. Includes links to inventories of IAWA archival collections.

9. Directory of British Architects 1834-1914: NA 967 D5724 2001 Architecture Lib. Reference

Includes biographical information, bibliographies, and sources of lists of works.

10. African-American Architects: a Biographical Dictionary, 1865-1945: NA 736 A47 2004 Architecture Lib. Reference

Includes a bibliography, and lists of buildings by state and by architect.


Directories of Architects and Firms

Membership directories usually list contact information for architects or firms and might also include lists of projects, bibliographic references and more:

Includes current contact information (and web sites) for architects and firms that are AIA members. Find your architect or firm listed alphabetically, by specialization, or under the state in which they practice. Note that a foreign architecture firm might be an AIA member if they practice in the United States .

2. American Architects Directory: NA 53 A37 1st 1956 through 3rd 1970 Architecture Lib. Reference

This precursor to Pro File includes lists of works and bibliographies.

3. Roster of Architects Registered to Practice in the State of Texas: NA 54 T4 R679 1997 Arch. Lib. Reference

Listing of contact information for architects registered in Texas.

4. RIBA, Royal Institute of British Architects: http://www.riba.org/

Current contact information (and web sites) for architects and firms that are RIBA members. Includes an international directory of practices (firms) that can be searched by country.

5. Directory of African American Architects: http://blackarch.uc.edu

Includes an alphabetical listing and state listings of African-American architects, landscape architects, and architecture school faculty. Over 1,500 names are currently featured, some with web site links.

6. Directory, African American Architects: NA 53 D57 2ND 1996 Architecture Lib. Reference

Print directory of African American architects licensed to practice in the U.S.

7. UIA: International Union of Architects: http://www.uia-architectes.org/texte/summary/p2b1.html

Provides links to web sites for regional organizations of architects and their member organizations. 100 countries are represented in the UIA. Some countries' architectural associations provide online directories.
