What is the Alexander Architectural Archive?
The Alexander Architectural Archive is repository of nearly 70 collections.
Holdings include documents reflecting the management of an architectural
firm, the development of a design through the finished product, and the
lives of architects, landscape architects, planners, designers,
preservationists, historians, and professors as well as records of related
businesses in the industry. The Archive's emphasis is on the southwest
region of the United States reflecting over 50 architects and firms,
however, we also have material from England, California, Chicago and some Latin
American countries. Appointments are available Monday through Friday, from 9 am-12pm and 1pm-4 pm.I'm already in the building can I look at some drawings?
Because service is by appointment only, staff time is often reserved with previous commitments that prevent our ability to service walk in visits.Why is it by appointment only?
Please call us at 495-4621. If the voice mail picks up, leave a message and we'll get back to you as soon as we are able.Why can't I look through the drawings myself?Information you should be prepared to provide Archive staff:
- Name of the architect or firm.
- Name of original client.
- Location of the property.
- Date of design or construction.
- Any previous research: where you looked and what you found.
Archive staff are highly trained in the handling of these often large and fragile documents.Why can't I check out Archive materials to make copies?
In the interest of safeguarding and preserving the collections for posterity, archival materials do not circulate.Why can't I browse the Archive to see what you have?
One of the reasons that the material has endured is that no one, including the staff, may browse the Archive under any circumstances. Finding aids are available to help you discover what is in a collection.
