Three (3) Positions Available

The Ask a Librarian Internship program provides School of Information students with hands-on experience in several areas of academic librarianship. Interns will work collaboratively with mentoring library staff to assist users with research questions and staff the Research Help & Checkout Desk in the Perry-Castañeda Library. Interns will also participate in the online reference component of the Ask a Librarian service, answering IM questions and email questions from users worldwide.

Interns will represent the Libraries at outreach events, such as New Student and Family Orientations. Interns may also work on projects pertaining to collection development, library instruction, digital humanities, open access and providing support for PCL’s Scholars Commons and Data Lab.  Other instruction opportunities, such as writing instructional content, creating tutorials, and teaching undergraduate information literacy classes are available as time permits.

Interns will be appointed on a semester basis and may apply to renew the internship for up to two years. Preference is given to candidates who will be enrolled in the School of Information for three or more semesters.

POSITION AVAILABLE: January 16, 2018. Position is subject to renewal each semester.

WORK SCHEDULE: Work schedule is variable, but requires at least two evening shifts (6pm – midnight) including weekends for a total of 20 hours per week.

DUTIES: Providing assistance to individuals at the Perry-Castañeda Library Research Help & Checkout Desk. Answering chat (IM) and email research questions. Referring users to appropriate staff from the Libraries and other campus learning support services and scheduling appointments for research consultations. Preparing research guides and tutorials on the use of library and learning support resources. Providing basic technical support for on-site hardware and software. Assist with the supervision and training for undergraduate desk staff as well as with general supervision of the desk during specified shifts.

Teaching drop-in library workshops to students, faculty, staff and the public. Providing research consultations for undergraduate researchers and mentoring library student workers. Interns may create instructional content and tutorials for the web or inclusion in Canvas.

REQUIRED: Graduate student in the School of Information enrolled for 9 semester hours during the Spring and Fall semesters, and at least 3 semester hours during the Summer session. Student must be in good academic standing.

PREFERRED: Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Experience working in a library. Reference experience and/or coursework in reference service. Strong commitment to service. Ability to evaluate, understand, and respond to research questions by utilizing knowledge of library resources. Interest in academic librarianship. Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Regular indoor work environment.

SALARY/BENEFITS: $1,063 per month. In-state tuition. Some benefits apply. TRB is not available for this position.
