* Research library rankings are published each year under the title "Holdings of University Research Libraries in U.S. and Canada" in The Chronicle Of Higher Education.  This year they appeared in the May 30, 2003 issue.  Library statistics for Texas include The University of Texas Libraries, The Ransom Center, the Law Library, and the Center for American History.  Rankings are based on the ARL Membership Criteria Index (http://www.arl.org/stats/factor.html) which is a composite summary of the relative size of Research Libraries and is used to determine membership eligibility for the Association of Research Libraries.
