Texas County Maps site completed

Zoom in to your favorite Texas county

AUSTIN, Texas (August 25, 1999) – Thanks to the recently completed project by the General Libraries at The University of Texas at Austin, Web surfers can now zoom in to their favorite Texas county or their favorite street in any city in Texas.

The Texas County Highway Maps Web site – available to the general public at http://txdot.lib.utexas.edu/ – originated as a joint project of the UT Austin Department of Geography and the General Libraries. The maps in this collection are published by the Texas Department of Transportation and reproduced with permission. The digitization of the full Texas counties collection was made possible by a TexShare Access to Local Holdings Grant awarded to the General Libraries in 1998. The project, under the direction of Mark McFarland of the General Libraries Digital Library Services Division, was completed in August 1999. The digitization of the maps was done by JJT, Inc. of Austin.

The Texas county maps can be accessed by a variety of means. The site offers an alphabetical listing by county or the user can simply search by the name of a county or city, lake, university, or other large geographical entity. Once the user has located the map of interest, it is then possible to zoom in to the details of the map as well as change the image size. This allows the searcher to focus on the fine details of any of the maps.

The Texas County maps site is a component of the Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection site overseen by Paul Rascoe, Map, Documents, and Electronic Information Services Librarian. These materials are located on UT Library Online (www.lib.utexas.edu), the General Libraries digital initiative visited each month by over five million information seekers around the globe.
