New program offers UT faculty and graduate students quick access to 10,000,000 additional books

AUSTIN, TX (September 11, 1998) - The Research Library Cooperative Program (RLCP), a joint venture of the libraries of The University of Texas at Austin, the University of California at Berkeley, and Stanford University, is now making available the circulating collections and some special collection materials of all three institutions to faculty, graduate students and professional staff via user-initiated requests and on-site visits. Eligible UT users can request library materials directly from UC Berkeley and Stanford or borrow materials in person from those libraries.

The RLCP, established in December 1997, is designed to foster regional cooperation in the areas of collections, services and digital projects. The program's first step was the allocation of collection responsibilities for Latin America with each library assuming responsibility for specific geographical and/or subject areas.

Through RLCP UT Austin faculty, graduate students, and professional staff will have direct access to over 10,000,000 additional volumes in the libraries at Stanford and UC Berkeley. Researchers can borrow on-site at these libraries or request that materials and journal article photocopies be sent to them in Austin. The program's Web site located at: www-sul.stanford.edu/depts/ils/RLCP/NewRLCP.html offers electronic registration forms (researchers must register first); e-mail request forms to request library materials from UC Berkeley and Stanford; and links to Socrates (Stanford's online catalog) and Pathfinder (UC Berkeley's online catalog).

University of Texas at Austin users must register for the program and may do so by using the Web form on the RLCP Web site, or they may register in person at the Courtesy Borrower Services Desk, PCL 2.122, during regular Courtesy Borrower Services hours. Once registered, UT Austin researchers can submit requests using the e-mail form provided. A few days after submission of a request, General Libraries Inter-Library Service staff will notify the UT Austin requestor by e-mail that the materials have arrived and are available at the ILS office (PCL 2.402A). Borrowed items must be returned to that location.
