Public symposium to focus on the dramatic changes in academic publishing and their effect on promotion and tenure, library collections and the conduct of research

EVENT: Publishing and the Academy: Current Issues
Sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and the University of Texas Libraries. The symposium is free and open to the public.
Richard W. Lariviere, Dean, College of Liberal Arts, and Fred Heath, Vice Provost, University of Texas Libraries, will offer introductory remarks. Niko Pfund, Vice President and Publisher of the Academic, Professional and Medical Division of Oxford University Press, New York, and Kate Jury, Marketing Director, Oxford University Press, Oxford, will discuss global changes in publishing. Joanna Hitchcock, Director, University of Texas Press, and Charles Backus, Director, Texas A & M University Press, will discuss the university press, the monograph and the market place; followed by Dennis Dillon, Associate Director for Research Services, University of Texas Libraries, and Patrick Olivelle, Professor and Chair, Department of Asian Studies, who will address the implications these changes have on library collections and the academy. The program will conclude with a question and discussion session moderated by Dean Richard W. Lariviere. A reception follows in the foyer after the program.
