Mark McFarland speaks at Southwest Texas Centennial celebration

Mark McFarlandAUSTIN, Texas (April 15, 1999) - Mark McFarland, head librarian of the Electronic Information Programs Division of the General Libraries at the University of Texas at Austin, initiated the second of Southwest Texas State University's four Chautauqua Series day-long programs with a presentation entitled, Building Information Spaces: Digital Libraries and Information Discovery on March 23, 1999. The Chautauqua Series is the principal feature of SWTSU's Centennial celebration.

In addition to the March 23 look at the future of technology, other programs in the series included the future of the planet on February 18 (with keynote speaker James Lovell), the future of media and communication on March 4 (with speakers James Carville and Mary Matalin) and the future of education on March 10 (with educational researcher Geoffrey Caine). Appearing with McFarland on the program were Bruce Sohn, site manager for Intel Corporation's newest manufacturing facility, Chris Dede, professor, Schools of Education and Information Technology/Engineering at George Mason University, and James Burke, British historian, author and television host of the highly acclaimed Connections series.

McFarland has directed the Electronic Information Programs Division of the General Libraries at the University of Texas at Austin since its establishment in 1994.
