An electronic newsletter published by The University of Texas at Austin General Libraries to share news about library collections and services.
THIS ISSUE:
UT SYSTEM REGENTS PROVIDE $1 MILLION TO ENHANCE LIBRARY COLLECTIONS
The UT System Board of Regents recently appropriated $1 million to
strengthen library collections and information resources of the UT-Austin
General Libraries and through expedited interlibrary services and
electronic delivery to enrich the resources of the other UT System
Libraries. Librarians of the component institutions have been consulting
with their faculty and students for several months and making
recommendations to the librarians at UT-Austin. These funds are for
one-time purchases (no subscriptions or ongoing financial commitments).
Discussions and decisions about possible purchases are being made in
cooperation with all participating institutions.
SPECIAL PURCHASE OF $200,000 WORTH OF SCHOLARLY BOOKS IN ALL FIELDS
The General Libraries has identified $2.5 million dollars worth of scholarly books from mainstream U.S. publishers that we were not able to acquire in the last few years because of financial constraints. Ten percent of these missed titles are being selected by library bibliographers to be added to the collection as part of the special $1 million UT System Regental funding. These titles should begin appearing on the shelves at the end of the Spring semester.
COMPLETE COLLECTION OF NAACP PAPERS
As part of the special Academic Library Collection Enhancement Program the
General Libraries will be acquiring the complete collection of the
microfilmed Papers of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Comprised of several hundred reels they
will be a significant addition to scholarship throughout the state.
300 NEW DATABASES BEING TESTED ON UT LIBRARY ONLINE
The General Libraries is currently conducting a nine-month test of 300 Web-based
databases marketed as Dialog@Carl. These databases cover a broad range of subject
interests and include many full-text sources. The Dialog@Carl databases can be
found on UT Library Online
under the "Indexes. Abstracts, and Full Text" link. The "Test Databases" link
may be found at the top of the page. Please let your librarian know what you
think of these or any other tests which you may find on the page.
SIGN UP TO RECEIVE WEEKLY NOTICES ABOUT PUBLISHED RESEARCH IN YOUR AREA
You can now set up your profile to automatically receive weekly by e-mail the
tables of contents of journals as they are published, or you can establish a
profile of keywords that will search the contents of over
17,000 academic journals and e-mail you the citations. Hundreds of campus researchers
have been using this service offered by Uncover Reveal for the past year. For
more information or to set up a profile see
Uncover Reveal, one of more than a
hundred databases and full-text resources available on UT Library Online under the "Indexes, Abstracts, and Full Text" link.
HAVE A QUESTION?
Library Reference Staff answer half a million reference queries each year.
These questions come from students and faculty, as well as scholars and
citizens throughout the state and from potential library users around the
world. In addition to answering questions by phone, in person, through
UTCAT, and by mail and e-mail, the library has been answering questions via
the World Wide Web for the last two years. For more information see "Ask a
Reference Question" on UT Library Online.
CLASSES ON USING LIBRARY RESOURCES AND ELECTRONIC INFORMATION
Each year the General Libraries offers hundreds of classes on how to find information. The listing of Spring Semester Electronic Information Classes can be found in any library unit or consult the Calendar or contact your subject bibliographer for a customized in-class or onsite presentation.
UT AUSTIN HAS 4TH LARGEST ACADEMIC LIBRARY CIRCULATION IN NORTH AMERICA
. . . and more:
5 million walk-in visitors a year.
3.5 million visits to UT Library Online, the General Libraries Web site each month.
7.5 million volumes.
