Celebrating the Life

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas Libraries have announced the winner of the 2013 Signature Course Information Literacy Award.

Dounya Alami-Nassif — a student in Government, International Relations and Global Studies — was selected for the honor based on research for her essay, “Manipulating the Portrait of the East: Evidence of Negative Cross-Cultural Narratives within The Picture of Dorian Gray and Dracula,” composed for the Fall 2012 Signature Course  "Modernity, Anxiety, and the Art of the Uncanny" taught by Dr. Elizabeth Richmond-Garza from the Department of English.

Alami-Nassif is also a scholar in The University of Texas Arabic Flagship Program, a three- to five-year intensive training program in Arabic language and cultures that seeks to graduate students with advanced proficiency in Arabic in order to create the next generation of global professionals.

The Signature Course Information Literacy Award recognizes exemplary student work that achieves the learning outcomes of the Signature Course information literacy requirement, which are that students will be able to create and execute a research strategy, critically evaluate information and use citations.

Alami-Nassif’s project was chosen for its sophisticated analysis of sources and the range and quality of sources used. Much of her research was conducted on-site using primary source materials from the archives of the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin.

Her paper has been placed in the open access University of Texas Digital Repository where it is available for review.

The award, which includes a $500 prize, is given annually to a project submitted in a Signature Course, and is judged by a panel consisting of librarians, faculty and members of the Undergraduate Studies staff.
