Celebrating the Life

AUSTIN, Texas (March 28, 2010) — The eighth installment of the Benson Latin American Collection's annual ¡A Viva Voz! features Austin-born psychedelic Afro-Latin funk band Ocote Soul Sounds.

The self-professed "coconut rockers" will lead a celebration of music and dance beginning at 7 pm on Thursday, April 8 at the Benson Latin American Collection in Sid Richardson Hall at The University of Texas at Austin.

Featuring the bandleaders of Grupo Fantasma and Antibalas – Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respectively – Ocote Soul Sounds has been described as "sounding like a sun kissed Brazilian soundtrack from the '70s."

The event will include a brief presentation by dj t-kay (Hip Hop Hooray, KOOP 91.7 fm), with a light reception prior to the performance.

¡A Viva Voz! was developed by former Benson Director Ann Hartness to highlight the library's broad Mexican American/U.S. Latino resources, engage the local community and to celebrate U.S. Latino culture. Past events have featured an array of guests, such as renowned Chicana artist Carmen Lomas Garza, author David Rice, actor Luis Avalos, and comic artists Los Bros Hernandez.

Please RSVP to or call 512-495-4363 if you would like to attend.
