Credit Union Student Learning Commons Opens in Perry–Castañeda Library on Aug. 31
AUSTIN, Texas (August 31, 2007) —A new space in the Perry–Castañeda Library funded by a $500,000 gift from the University Federal Credit Union will open at the end of August.
The University Federal Credit Union (UFCU) provided the University of Texas Libraries funds for the renovation of the Perry–Castañeda Library’s (PCL) main floor. A ribbon cutting and reception will take place in the new space from 2–4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31.
The reception marks the completion of the first significant renovation to the PCL since the building’s dedication in 1977. The former periodicals room has been redesigned into a modern community study area while maintaining the academic resources available in the room.
Changes to the 11,000–square–foot space include the installation of softer, casual lighting, adaptable new furniture arrangements, new shelving for paper–bound resources such as journals and newspapers, and the addition of a student gallery space. Infrastructure and technology upgrades to the space have been incorporated as part of the overall plan.
"The opening of this space represents the first step in a greater transformation of the Perry–Castañeda Library into a space conducive to the changing needs of modern users," says Vice Provost and Libraries Director Fred Heath. "The physical changes resulting from the renovation reflect a philosophical change in approaches to learning by effecting an environment more suited to a sense of community.
"The UFCU’s generosity demonstrates an understanding of the importance of community support for education for the common good. We cannot thank the Credit Union enough.’
This is not the first time UFCU has shown its financial support of the Libraries. Last year as part the Libraries’ Annual Giving program, the Credit Union provided a pivotal matching grant.
"UFCU is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the university to strengthen its library system," says University Federal Credit Union President and CEO Tony Budet.
"We recognize the quality leadership of Fred Heath and his team and appreciate his long–term vision for reconfiguring UT libraries to meet contemporary standards. Also, we’re pleased that, through existing or former affiliation with UT, many of UFCU’s member–owners will directly benefit from these enhancements."
