This chart shows the predecessors of Bunsen, Liebig, and Cooke, all of whom were descendants of Guillaume Rouelle.
Cooke (1827-94) had no formal training in chemistry and earned no PhD, but attended lectures by Silliman as a teenager, and later attended lectures by Regnault and Dumas while he was in Europe. He established Harvard's chemistry department and the first laboratory course in an American university. (cf Mainz)
W.A. Noyes Jr. is the only UT professor who traces back directly to the French school without passing through Bunsen, Liebig, or Cooke.
