Stacks Guide

This guide to call number locations for materials in the Perry-Castañeda Library includes the PCL Stacks on Levels 3-6. Each Level is arranged in Sections A-S, identified on maps near the elevators and on signs at the ends of each row of shelves.

Oversize books, which have call numbers preceded by -F- or -Q-, are located in sections A and B on each Level; for example: -F- DC 611 L81 P4613 1986 is in section 3B, not 3N.

Checking for books not on the shelf

• Library Catalog records include a status display when a book is CHECKED OUT, NO LONGER AVAILABLE, etc. (If a book is checked out, you may use the REQUEST option in the bottom of the Brief Records display.)
• Verify that there is no status display, indicating that the book should be available.
• Double-check the call number; note any special locations, such as oversize
  (-F- or -Q-) or locations other than PCL Stacks.
• Check the Distribution Area (behind offices opposite the elevators on the appropriate Level) where books and periodical volumes are sorted in separate areas for reshelving. If staff are working there, ask for their help in locating the item.
• Check copier areas on Levels 1, 2, 4 and 6.
• Ask at the Information and Research Help Desk on Level 2 for help in locating other copies.
• If you can not find the book, you may complete and submit a Search Request form at the Check Out Desk.
